Things You Should Know

Meet the mushroom

Reishi is arguably the most famous and researched of all the medicinal mushrooms, with annual sales of over 2 billion dollars worldwide! Reishi, or Ganoderma lucidum to give it its botanical name has a reputed wide range of benefits due to its combination of high polysaccharide content (with the fruiting body containing approx. 41% beta-glucan) and triterpenoid compounds.

Reishi is considered the king of tonic herbs, the ‘mushroom of immortality’ in Japan and the ‘mushroom of spiritual potency’ in China. It is revered as an important restorative medicinal mushroom and as an adaptogen to balance the nervous response during stressful periods. Reishi spores are the most concentrated part of the mushroom. Mushrooms4 Life’s Organic Reishi Spore capsules contain shell-broken spore powder with 6% minimum bioactive triterpenes.

Traditional uses

Considered the best mushroom to strengthen the Zheng Qi (or vitality, life force, environmental resistance), reishi is used to support the body’s natural defences. It is believed to strengthen the blood and ‘yin’ energy, which in excess can cause feelings of coldness, lethargy and exhaustion. Reishi is therefore indicated in both physical and mental fatigue.

An effective mushroom for harmonising the ‘Shen’ spirit that lives in the heart, reishi is traditionally indicated for mild depression, anxiety, insomnia, and restlessness. It is believed to be supportive of liver energy and regeneration. When the liver is congested, it can lead to mood swings, irritability, PMT, and imbalanced hormones.

Did you know? Wild reishi is rare, and in the years before it was cultivated, only the nobility could afford it. It was believed that the sacred fungus grew in the home of the immortals on the ‘three aisles of the blest’ off the coast of China.

Research

Reishi’s impressive health benefits are due in part to its high polysaccharide content and triterpenoid compounds, of which over 130 have been identified. They belong primarily to two families: the ganoderic and lucidenic acids, which have been studied for a wide variety of biologically active functions. Research has focused on their effects regarding inflammation, cholesterol, liver function, immune modulation, as well as antioxidant and antimicrobial effects.

Reishi is a good source of various minerals including the rare germanium, as well as vitamin D2, long-chain fatty acids, alkaloids, polysaccharides, and numerous other compounds.

Modern pharmacological research has also concentrated on reishi’s hepatoprotective benefits (for liver health), anti-inflammatory effects, as well as its antioxidant potential as a free radical scavenger.

How To use it

Adults take 2 capsules 1-3 times a day with or without food.

According to the Myco Medica, when paired with cordyceps, cordyceps should be taken in the morning, reishi in the evening. Reishi may promote restful sleep, so enjoy some in a night-time beverage as part of your evening routine.

Reishi can also be a useful mushroom to add to your daily regimen if you are affected by symptoms during seasonal allergies and hayfever season.
